Harold’s Interlocking transfer switch

Another DIYer Transfer Interlock done by Harold Madison, friend of Utterpower. Do note I had trouble wiht the form of the document he sent me, so there’s some cuts and pastes on my part. I love pop rivits, so I would haves used them 🙂

Harold writes:

This is my interlocking transfer switch arrangement:

Note the main breaker is ON, to the right, and the 50 amp double-pole

breaker (Standby power in) is blocked in the OFF position by the slide.

With the main breaker OFF, to the left, the slide can now be moved up, unblocking the 50 amp double pole breaker which can now be turned ON.

Stand-by power is now connected to the load but cannot be connected to the grid.

Any Questions? Harold might show up to answer them..

        Hot     Neutral

115 volt supply from the genset.

Note that the two hot legs of the 220 V plug are jumpered together so both are fed from the same source. They are therefore “in phase” so there is no voltage potential between them.  With this configuration any 115 volt appliance in the house can be operated, none of the 220 volt ones can operate. There’s no need to turn off 220 volt breakers.

The refrigerator and freezer stay cold with no cords strung all over; the TV can be used to receive weather reports and monitor weather radar. Another up side of this is any 115 volt light in the house can be used so you can park the flashlight.  You do need to pay attention and not overload your standby generator.

My generator is a 2500 / 3000 watt unit that has served me well. With this power limit if I decide to use the electric coffee pot or the microwave oven I need to stop, inventory and make appropriate adjustments if necessary.

OK George; here’s my question:

If this configuration were inadvertently connected to the grid, what would happen?

I believe opposing secondary winding halves in the power company transformer supplying 220 Volt, 200 Amps to my place would smoke my generator with nothing out of the primary to the lines. However, since I never did finish my EE degree, I’m not sure; and I’m not about to try it.

A New and Less Expensive ON Grid or Off Grid set up?

Recently, I posted the Utterpower DIYer $20 Inter locking Transfer Switch. Following is a drawing of how it might be deployed in an off grid setup that can grow, and make use of wind, hydro, solar, or even pedal power if that’s all you got at the moment.

Off grid Basic design

But There’s another topic we need touch on, and that be the Inverter Generator. We know it’s becoming popular, we know it will be available in diesel if it isn’t already. The diesel version would be somewhat of a contradiction as the inverter generators are normally an exercise in light weight.

Inverter Generator With Batteries

Inverter Generator With Batteries ????

If we do consider adding batteries to the inverter’s bus, we’ll also need adequate air flow to cool inverter components, (maybe an electric fan?). We know the battery voltage will  likely be higher voltage, and more dangerous than our typical 48V and lower Battery banks, so we’ll need covers, and adequate connectors to keep fingers out of the hazzard.   Could this be a viable solution in the future for Off Gridders? redundancy you say? Buy two.. 🙂

Your input please.. Sometimes we see what we believe to be a natural step in the evolution of a product. We also know that if we thought of it, so have 10,000 others or more.

Will Inverter generators hit the market soon with another connector on them? One for a battery pack? And will that battery pack have another connector to hook in your solar array for charging?

The cost of looking weak?

It may be equal to actually being weak !!

Here’s a great article.. Another reason to trust in yourself… read the quote..

“Many of these countries who are moving away from the dollar no longer view America as a stable and reliable force on the world economic stage and they are seeking alternatives as a hedge against a severe future decline in the dollar’s value.”

http://economyincrisis.org/content/the-beginning-of-the-end-for-the-u-s-dollar-as-the-world-reserve-currency

As this President’s supporters argue the point, the world reacts. Another direct withdraw from your savings?

QE3, did you ever imagine?

As the outside world looks in, what do they think?

ayn-rand-reason

ayn-rand-reason

I’m pretty sure I have the answer, the majority don’t spend more than a second thinking about QE3, because they don’t understand how connected they are to it.

Understanding QE3 is easy. QE1 failed, QE2 failed, and most everyone knows that QE3 will fail as well, but will it help cover up the stink till December?

QE3 works directly as a wealth transfer from those who were stupid enough to save the US Dollar. You may not know that you are a saver, but if you paid into a union, corporate, or private pension fund, or towards Social Security, those dollars WILL inflate further.  Going to the store each day, you know that inflation is real.  How will a pension fund survive when it has no earnings, and pay outs to pensioners are made out of diminishing  principle each month? Yes, there is no magic, no fairy dust..

What the FED is doing today with QE3 simply continues the theft of your money. It denies you any opportunity of making an interest rate, and forces you to take on high risk in search of >any< type of income.  If you allow it to sit in a savings account, it is essentially  being confiscated through the FED’s ‘planned’ inflation.

You need not ask if this is true, just look at the interest your savings account earned over the last 10 years. But do see the problem as being far larger than this fact alone!

America has simply decided to run it’s house on credit, and as you watch people in this Administration spend borrowed money on every sort of pipe dream, do consider that it >is< causing your pension fund to fail.

What is the FED thinking? The answer… they think no further than tomorrow.

What are you thinking? Well, you should be thinking about the ‘Catch 22’. The Prostitutes in Government who willfully sell our future in order to stay in power for another term.

Here’s the simple truth… the FED claims they do QE3 to allow easier home mortgages at ultra low interest.  What this essentially does is throw a wrench into the gear works that attempt to correct a very bad situation.

There is no way these houses will be sold under the artificially low interest rate.. as the loans only allow people to live in the house until they or others discover they can’t afford it. Here’s how it will play out..

Your dollar is no longer real money, as it no longer earns any kind of interest, and you do remember not long ago, pension funds calculated your lump sum based on 7% earnings!

So what to do?   I guess it’s better to ask what every one else will do shortly when they finally figure out they’ve been swindled, and that will be to flee the US dollar in any way possible.

And these homes they claim to have arranged mortgages for? Is it not obvious that the Government has effectively arranged to loan the money to people that really can’t afford the house? Isn’t this just more of the same?

What is that definition of insanity? To do over and over again something that proved not to work last time.. well that be your government 🙂  And now.. we’ll watch to see how many people will sleep walk to the polls and vote.  They’ll vote for the easy road, the sweetest teat. All they vote for is a happy tomorrow… and of course, politicians offer  just that.. the day after? Well, that’s your problem…

We should thank the greatest generation for caring enough to worry about our future.  They sacrificed so much to give us what they did. And we need ask.. Did we teach our children to believe in magic?

The best you can do is scale back, live modestly, and pay off debts. It’s going to be a rough ride. Buy your garden tools now, before the cost of a hoe is more than the last TV you bought. And.. as you drift off to sleep tonight, Remember that your all caring Government put you on the hook to underwrite a lot of those pension funds…

But now we can see how this will all play out. The US Government has punished every type of desirable behavior.. savers punished, borrowers and even vagrants rewarded. And successful people are now targets of ridicule and disdain?   Humans naturally flee from punishment, and shouldn’t we revisit that old definition of insanity?  To save the US Dollar over and over again when it bears no interest and only inflates? Are you insane ?

And the typical response from my generation, and those after it? “Hey dude.. you trying to bum me out?

And I pause to think about my Senators.. especially Patty Murray, all knowing, all caring, cocksure she understands that taking care of every ill she sees today is all that matters. She reminds me of the lifeboat Captain who scuttles the boat  as she has no clue the boat has a limit to what it can carry in a single trip.

But we need ask… What would Patty Murray and others who have no critical thinking skills do to us IF only they could alter our Constitution ? An Ayn Rand thought?

“…It cannot be repeated too often that the Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals—that it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government—that it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizens’ protection against the government.” | The Virtue of Selfishness

Happy Constitution Day!”

DIY Storm Generator, Mitch Leland… Texas

Just like Songs, about the time you think you’ve heard it all,  there’s a new and catchy jingle you really like..  DIY is the same way for me.  About the time I think I’ve seen it all, something a little different pops up..

Art Decco

Mitch’s DIY flows, the Utterpower pulley was easily modified by turning a spud in the back to index into the same area the stock pulley mounted.  He’s artfully located three holes for mounting bolts, and dresses it up with counter sunk hardware.

The belt cover looks to have been designed by one of those high end Italian art studios.

Yes, Mitch could have put Mini mag wheels on his work, but then it might have been so pretty… some woman would come along wanting to cut the gas tank top out and use if for an indoor flower planter!  A guy has to know where to stop 🙂

Great Job Mitch.. visitors.. do consider liking Mitch’s youtube video 🙂

Isaac Tests A DIY Kiss Design

As I often say, the power of utterpower is getting reports from DIYers around the world, what works and what doesn’t. A lot of us like the two bearing generators when we can find them.

CF-Diesel_ST-head

CF-Diesel_ST-head

One thing I like is trouble shooting them.  If you have a new noise, you can quickly drop the belt, and investigate whether it’s coming from the engine or the gen side.

Richard’s Simple DIY machine provided all the coverage he needed, and I think he’s still smiling..

CF-Diesel_ST-head2

CF-Diesel_ST-head2

Following is Richard’s email:

Hey George

Sorry it took so long to get you these pictures.

This  is the generator that I built with the pulleys from you and inspiration from your CD and website. It ran thru Isaac, even in the pouring rain. I plan to make a cover for it soon. When not in use, it stays covered.  It amazes me how a 3KW diesel can outperform a 4 KW gasoline gen set easily.

I recommend diesels as generators compared to gasoline more now than ever!

Many thanks for your help!

We can’t get much simpler than this, but it’s a fact that it served Richard’s needs, it ran through a storm that caused a lot of people misery, and it reminds me of a few pictures I’ve received over the years.

One memorable set of pictures was a DIYer who was serving up hot meals to his neighbors, a blender and large bucket of ice for making margaritas. The hot humid period of a day when they were in the calm center of the storm. The trees uprooted, and  debris laying everywhere. But for that moment, the sound of a lone ‘thumping’ generator was music to their ears..

Sharon Silke Carty, Comments on the Chevy Volt.

Carty, Dip Stick Of The Week?

Finally! We have an answer as to why such a popular car has poor sales figures!

If you’re like me, you’re sure if one out of every 50 people who told you they liked the Volt bought one, it’d be a worlds all time best seller.  Just where are all the buyers? Every liberal blogger in the universe says it’s the hottest thing since sliced bread! Sharon even quotes some loon that the volt may be one of the greatest advances of mankind,  right in there with the wheel Sharon?

Sharon Sike Carty apparently has the answer to low sales.  She thinks Conservatives have scared Liberals away from the car?  They can’t think for themselves, and Conservatives control their car buying decisions?  Her article below opens in a new window, read what she says, sound like an auto reporter to you? This is a new age, and I have to read and reread these articles. what I have come to realize is the modern reporter who covers topics like autos more often than not does no more than quote other people, they have to.. they have so little first hand knowledge of the technology.

Sharon’s child Like photo image she attaches to her credentials makes you wonder just how long she’s been out of the crib?  Just what does she know about cam profiles, and if we handed her a Duntov 3030, would she know where to ‘stick’ it? An Auto Journalist? sure.. as long as you prefix it with the Huff.

A recent tweet from Sharon:

Are you one of those mean conservatives than has told your liberal friends they can’t buy a Chevy Volt? Please, let up on them a bit.. let them know it’s OK with you if they buy one….

But Sharon.. do remember, if Conservatives can dictate to Liberals what car to buy or not buy…… can’t they also tell you who to vote for?

As for Lee Sphincterman, how lucky is he to live in a free country, and able to buy the car he wants.. but come on, this is not a new idea.  Fact is back in 1898 a very exceptional 23 year old engineer built a hybrid car that could travel nearly 40 miles on a charge, about the same distance as the Volt!

1898:  The Austrian Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, at age 23, built his first car, the Lohner Electric Chaise. It was the world’s first front-wheel-drive. Porsche’s second car was a hybrid, using an internal combustion engine to spin a generator that provided power to electric motors located in the wheel hubs. On battery alone, the car could travel nearly 40 miles.

Do a review of the all time bench mark sales disaster… “The Edsel“.. if Government Motors sold as many Volts, they’d be dancing in the streets!

Build the $20 Utterpower Interlocking Transfer Switch.

Main-Switch

Cool looking old switch I found in the bowels of a Seatle Building.

No doubt, there’s a lot of us that build less than ideal stuff for our own use. It’s because we are thrifty and think we can get away with things.. sometimes we don’t 🙂

Utterpower 20dollar-Trans-Front

Utterpower 20dollar-Trans-Front

Fact is, when the lights go out, we are sometimes under pressure and in a hurry. This is when a lot of stuff gets burned up, and many people will tell you.. “sure I knew better”, but I just forgot to open that breaker before I did this or that.  Since your wife claims to own a good number of appliances,  you best think about reducing the risk of burning HER stuff up; cause you know you’ll never hear the end of it, and your meals could be pretty basic for a while.

I talked about how inexpensive it is to buy a Kill A Watt, and how everyone who owns one should use it to monitor frequency and voltage, but there’s something just as important that we should all consider… an ‘interlocking transfer switch!’

This simple to make device will allow only one ‘source’ to power your appliances at a time, and it will assure you don’t make smoke, ruin a generator, or electrocute the man on the power pole who is attempting to restore your power.

You might read my article ‘How to install an generator transfer switch at Zach’s house first. This will give you an idea how to do it best.  The way I show here is far better than nothing, and if you want to run more than one circuit like the loop of wall plugs in the family room, you could find a box with four positions, and cut two notches in the interlock.. Hey, you’re a DIYer right? Once you have the idea, you can roll your own, and make it the way you need it..

20 Dollar Utterpower Gen Trans Wiring

20 Dollar Utterpower Gen Trans Wiring

If you are wiring this in permanent, the lead marked grid will be connected to the output of your circuit breaker in the main box.  The lead marked load will be tied to the wire in the circuit box that feeds the circuit you want to power with the generator, and of course, the Generator lead goes back to the generator, or the box that contains the plug in where you will cross connect your portable power when you need it.

For $20, can you afford to keep  running your extension cord through the window to a junction box, and then attempt to run your important stuff off other extension cords from there? Are you tired of looking for the cords in the dark when you need them?

If $20 is too much, there’s another trick I used for years  that cost me two dollars that made my life a little easier. It does require that you remember to open a breaker!  I went to a plug in the family room that shared a wall with the garage. I opened the wall plug and proved that only wall board was between the back of that plastic plug box, and the garage. Once I was satisfied things were ok, I pushed a sharp piece of wire thru the wall (a piece of coat hanger) to locate the spot.   I then went just below that box to assure I had adequate room for what they call an ‘old work box’.  This is found in near any hardware store,  a plastic  box that has wings that fold out behind the sheet rock to secure it instead of mounting the box to a stud as new construction boxes  do.

Hold the box in place, use a pencil to trace around it, and then carefull cut the hole for the box.. do not crowd the wall stud! Once you have your box in, you can wire in a recessed male plug, you should consider having a cover over it if you have curious kids, use your good judgement. Some people make a back to back male to male plug and store it with their generator.. (this is also risky and you need think when you use it). The advantage? you keep the generator outside the garage door, the extension cord doesn’t have to get slammed in the door, or go through an open window, the carbon monoxide stays outside, you stay inside.

The DIYer Transfer switch might even be legal in your area if the breakers are ‘switch rated’ you can read more about that in the other article  mention above.

Facts are, we are likely to see more power outages in our future, so why not get ready for it? You don’t need to invest much, and many times a small generator will run that blower in your natural gas furnace and allow you to stay warm, watch TV, run the microwave, and wonder what the people who didn’t plan at all are doing? Maybe you invite your good neighbors over for a game of cards?

Remember.. you will always check with your city, county, state, and Federal authorities, I have no license to tell you a thing. This article is all about things you might investigate doing..

the parts I used? A box and two breakers from Home depot, I like Square D Homeline as they seem good and are cheaper for me to buy. I also used a piece of alum sheet metal, also found at Home depot, and a few small screw and nuts from the junk drawer.

Yes, I did cheat on the slots, but it your careful you can do as good with steel and a 1/4 die grinder with a cut off wheel, just drill the holes at the ends first, and cut to them using a guide. And you can make your template out of paper, and then glue it to your work one you have the slots proven on the front of your box.

How about a bit of trivia to end this post? All Kill A Watts I’ve ever seen have a miinor error.. when you have a real solid 60.00 HZ, they read 99.9. when you see 99.9 there’s a very good chance you’re looking at commercial power. If you or a friend has a lapse, and wonders what you’re running of of.. a steady 99.9 is a pretty strong clue..

Germany’s Power Quality Now in Trouble?

Yes, Merkle has attempted to Warn German Citizens that they need slow down, and make measured adjustments to their power grid, but we’ve seen her branded as the Devil for doing so. Is it time for industry to flee Germany? I think so.. Is it the 1930s all over again? Some think so. Maybe go to France? Nope, I bet they’re already talking about shutting off their source of income too, as they voted for magic and fairy dust as well.

http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/instability-in-power-grid-comes-at-high-cost-for-german-industry-a-850419.html

If you have any back ground in power quality, you know that all of industry is built around the fact that the commercial AC sine wave is reliable.. this has been fact in countries like UK, Germany, Canada and the USA, and machines and processes have been developed assuming this WILL remain the standard. This is not so in under developed countries, they operate on Diesel power at regular intervals WHEN the grid quality suffers, they’ve learned they have to do this to survive.

If you are on the far left.. you might say good! This is progress, we’ll learn how to manage on these unpredictable resources like wind and solar.

If you are not so far left, if you were actually awake in eight grade science class, you will understand that these companies are spending their valuable reserves retrofitting their production facilities with diesel back up power, and planning to burn diesel in order to prevent damage and lost productivity that could threaten their very existence. BUT.. they also might need a crystal ball in order to anticipate a glitch and have that power on line to cover it.  And just how much carbon is saved when we move electrical power production to the factory?

Yes, we do know that the Far left will be blogging at places like the Huffington post any minute now to explain that all we need is a little fairy dust, and a few trillion more of investment, (money we don’t have) and we’ll all be living with free energy forever more..    The far left (for the most part) has the ability to make all things complex simple in their minds. There are those who vote that think you can run an entire factory off a single solar panel, most all of them vote for a single party, and that party will likely make a deal with the devil to assure they keep voting with that party.

Here in America, there’s a new reason to fleece the public, and a new way to funnel money to friends of the party in power in order to stay in power… They will call it Co-Generation, the left will assume it’s a new idea, and magic, the Engineer will see it as a return to the 1880s when every factory operated with cogeneration power plants.

As with my Example of Amonix, we watched an obtuse public in Las Vegas look on at a company making Solar CPV, millions of dollars worth manufactured right under their noses…. and once it was all built, who among them asked.. “now that this stuff is all in the field, does it work, and how well?” Do they all suffer from Sun stroke?

Meanwhile, there’s workers at Hatch New Mexico attempting to sort out the mess, the owners of the plant would be crowing like a cock if it were good news, but all we hear is silence.. same goes for the other Amonix 7700 power plant at Alamosa..  if it works, it news,, if it doesn’t lay low. Is it possible that there’s enough money for labor hours and repairs so that Next Era can share the power production figures for at least one month? To my knowledge, there hasn’t been a good month yet.

Did I hear that Harry Reid’s son is pushing for another big solar investment in Nevada? Why not.. Nevada is one of the easiest states in the union to snooker, it’s not that they can’t ask a good question, it’s that they don’t ask any questions at all, that’s the public I’m talking about. the PUC has been far wiser, but will they be demonized like Merkle?

It’s all what I think, and up to now, it’s still legal here to have your own thoughts.. but for how long? The far left’s so-called cure will likely kill us .. but don’t we know. A good famine will correct the problem as they see it 🙂 Maybe that’s the real plan?

And that passage in a book about the meek inheriting the earth? maybe those folks so far out.. the nomads, those who grow their own food, those who don’t pay property taxes, or invest in currency that will turn to dust.. maybe they’ll be the ony ones that survive….

Well, there will be others, and no doubt Washington DC and 500 or more have a plan to take care of themselves and their families..

What’s your plan? One thing you have over the far left, is you actually know the difference between a BTU and an IOU.. they’ll need you to fix their stuff.. if they don’t starve you out before they discover that fact.

Lister Engine Clone Study Under Way

broken-clone-gear

broken-clone-gear

I am looking for your help! I need more  pictures of broken and/or failed Lister or Lister Clone gears. There are a number of gears that sharpened themselves to a razor edge on the tip of the teeth, do you own one? When was the last time your reached up inside your engine to feel the end of the teeth on the idler ans cam gear? They need be square on the end, check it now, if they are sharp, a train wreck could happen at any time, and they’re ugly!

Please forward any pictures you have to: george@utterpower.com

I think you’ll enjoy hearing some of the information that comes out of this study.
